General Membership Meeting Minutes
March 5, 2008

Call to order

The meeting was called to order at 7:04 PM.

Presentation by Mr. Kattic – Mr. Kattic, Commander of the VFW presented the Sunset Valley PTA with an award for Meritorious and Distinguished Service in Furthering the Aims and Ideals of the VFW of the USA. He came to thank the children and families of SVE for their generous donations to the children of Iraq. He read a letter from a staff sergeant who uses our donations when he meets the people of Iraq. A photo was taken and should appear in the Network.

Principal’s Report –Kindergarten update: It has been found that there is no significant difference in achievement between children who attended full day vs. ½ day kindergarten, when they are in a 1st grade classroom. Therefore, next year we will have 1 full day class and the rest will be ½ day classes. There are currently 90 students who are registered for kindergarten. There will be an orientation in May and again in August.

Field Trips: Mrs. McCracken has given the teachers the option of taking the children out of the building for field trips. An issue has arisen with parents having concerns about their children traveling and the parents wanting to be chaperones with limited number of chaperones available. Mrs. McCracken asked the pta for suggestions to help alleviate this situation. Someone recommended adding to our bylaws that to chaperone a trip, not only do you have to be a pta member and volunteer trained, but also have participated in a certain number of events at SVE prior to the field trip. It was thought that these parents would be more likely to know the children by name, and the children also would know or be familiar with the parents. Participating in a number of events at SVE shows commitment to helping the children of SVE. These events could include things such as volunteering in the library, reading counts, or any other pta sponsored events. There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer even if a parent works full time. This recommendation came from someone who works full time for a school district as a teacher and will provide the pta with a copy of similar bylaws from a school district that currently has this policy. Mrs. McCracken would like feedback to support out of building field trips with out a lot of issues from parents.

March 20th will be a snow make up day.
